IP Address

Internet Protocol Address, a unique number assigned to a computer connected to the Internet. Data passing across the Internet is routed to computers based on their IP address. 

Familiar names for popular computers, such as www.microsoft.com, are converted to their less well known IP addresses by the Domain Name System (DNS). This usually takes place silently, behind the scenes, without us knowing about the translation.
